2025 Results
This year, 11 of my tutees were sitting the SQA Advanced Higher Maths exam.
- 6 achieved Grade A, including an A1 and an A2 band pass
- 1 achieved Grade B
- 4 achieved Grade C
The A1 and A2 band passes would have achieved well even without tuition. There was one tutee whose grade improved from a C at his prelim to an A in the exam, and similarly the person who obtained a B exceeded what I thought they might achieve.
On the other hand two tutees who obtained C passes had every reason to expect an A or B pass and must have been disappointed not to. It is important to realise that enlisting the services of a tutor in preparing for an exam like SQA Advanced Higher Mathematics does not necessarily mean an enhanced pass will be achieved.

Why Weekly Advanced Higher Maths Tuition Makes a Real Difference
Many students need to achieve an A in Advanced Higher Mathematics even when the university course they intend to study is not directly mathematical. In recent years, I have supported several tutees in this situation — for example, those applying for Medicine or Psychology, where a strong performance in mathematics is still expected.
It is important to understand that Advanced Higher Mathematics is largely bookwork: there is a substantial volume of material, but it is methods based and highly learnable. Achieving an A or B grade is well within the reach of most dedicated candidates. In 2025, 59.4 % of candidates attained a B or above, including 41.3 % who achieved an A.
It’s worth pointing out that first-year university mathematics, especially in science and engineering degrees, is often taught under the title “Mathematical Methods.” These courses develop the core techniques introduced in Advanced Higher Mathematics and apply them to the broader problems encountered in university-level study.
Therefore it is helpful to view Advanced Higher Mathematics as preparation for university-level study. The pace at university is faster and the content more rigorous, but the essential foundations are provided by Advanced Higher. Making the most of this course — with the support of personal tuition — can give you a real advantage when you begin your degree.
Another important thing to understand is that success at this level is more about not losing motivation by falling behind rather than staying motivated. Advanced Higher Maths moves quickly, and small gaps in understanding can grow into larger obstacles.
